The annual Bordeaux lunch hosted by Barriere Freres and Canon De Colorado is always a harbinger of fall. Buyers are treated to a first glimpse of the new bordeaux vintages that will be arriving soon for fall and winter. The focus is on the 2008 vintage and it is a good one.
Robert Parker’s analysis;”2008 had all the qualities that make…..a great vintage so special: exceptionally dark opaque colors, gorgeously ripe fruit, stunning purity almost across the board, great freshness (because it was a cool year) slightly higher acids than normal and remarkable density as well as concentration…..the tannins are unusually velvety…..” ” In short, the vintage is vastly superior to 2007,2006,2004,2003,2002,2001, and 1999″ WHICH IS QUITE A STATEMENT.
The other good news are the prices. The exchange rate is much better than past vintages, so this is the vintage to buy, especially as it was quite short in total production. The 2008 Crus are going to be a lot cheaper than the 2009 Crus next year, no matter the exchange rate.
If you are interested in pre-buying bordeaux from Avon Liquor please contact us before we need to place our final order on Sept. 20th.
Here are some highlights from the luncheon.
Grand Bateau Rouge ’08 from Chat. Beychevelle, is always an excellent buy for every night type of wines. @ $10.99 per bottle.
Chat. d’Arvigny ’08, Haut Medoc-2nd of Chat. Beaumont, is showing well early and is always a solid and delicious buy @ $14.99.
Chat. Doisy Daene Bordeaux Blanc ’08 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and expressed an intense minerality and lovely lemon notes, that made it a perfect food wine @ $31.99.
Les Cles du Pape Clement, Pessac-Leognan’08 has a forward nose with a lovely elegance, purity and minerality @ $48.99, this wine is one of my favorites from this lunch.
Chat.Corbin,G.C.C.St. Emilion ’08 has a big nose ,showing early, but has the acid and fruit balance to age @$40.99.
Amiral de Beychevelle, St. Julien ’08, is always a winner with balance and structure @$40.99.
Blasson d’ Issan, Margaux ’08 is a consistently good second wine to watch for. It has an elegant style that disguise the tanin structure and can be for early drinking @$41.99.
Chat. Beychevelle, St. Julien ’08 is a classic and very well structured bordeaux @$89.99. This property produces beautiful wines worthy of a cellar.
Chat. Giscours, Margaux ’08 was the winner for me that day. It showed it’s character early with a forward nose and classic structure. This is an early drinking wine to consider @$67.99.
Over all, 2008 Bordeaux shows balance and structure. There were many more wines to talk about in less expensive price ranges as well. If you are interested in purchasing any of these wines, please contact Avon Liquor. The wines will be arriving Nov. to Dec.

These two beers from Ridgeway Brewing in Oxfordshire, England are serious beers with a penchant for humor. “BAD ELF” is a Winter’s Ale which has Olde England meeting the New World, with strong IPA characteristics which show depth, texture and nuance. This beer is blended with English malt and balanced with an amazing 45 ounces of fresh hops-including English Cascade- per barrel. A little malt, a little hops, and lots of holiday trouble-making; this Elf is so bad, its way good!
